Be Here Now By Nancy Mitchell-Edwards, R.Sc.P. Happy New Year! The change of the calendar engenders a sense of newness, hope, enthusiasm, opportunity. We can just flip the page and start over. Or at least that is what many of us would like to do. We make resolutions to change habits that no longer serve us; to lose weight, stop smoking or drinking, increase our spiritual life, to be a better husband/wife/partner/friend/parent/employee, and so on and so on. Many times these resolutions go by the wayside before the ink is even dry on the paper. This is merely an observation of our, oh-so-human behavior. It is, at times, difficult for us to get our humanness (ego) out of the way in order to create the life we truly desire and deserve. If I am describing you in any way, perhaps the trick that I use might assist you in creating the life that you want to experience. For the last six years, I have carried a small glass globule with me everywhere I go. If I have a pocket, it goes into my pocket. No pocket? I tuck it inside my purse. I use this to anchor being in the moment. All it says is “Be Here Now”. Seems to be a pretty easy thing to do. After all, where else could you or I be? And that, my friends, is the trick. For instance, most of the time, we are either thinking about the past or worrying about the future. That takes us completely away from the “Now”. This invites us to be here NOW. The next part is “Here”. Where else could we be but here? Again, we are thinking about dinner when we are at work, shopping when we are in church, at work when we are with our children, or with our unfinished business when we are out to lunch with friends. This list is truly endless, however, this invites us to be HERE now. As for the “Be,” it doesn’t say be busy, be on time, be there, or any other number of descriptions of beingness. It merely invites us to BE here now. Taken all together, I have created a mantra with this simple expression: Be, Be Here, Be Here Now. Know that there really is no better place or time then where you are right now. Enjoy your new year. It is bound to be the best. And remember: BE HERE NOW! |
