Why I came and Why I Stayed By Debra Patterson I first came to The Denver Church of Religious Science as a skeptical but dutiful spouse. You see, I’m one of those who was perfectly happy at Mile Hi, and saw no reason for a change. I was, at the time, married to a man who had great difficulty negotiating his movement in large crowds due to multiple sclerosis, so we both thought a smaller church would work better for him. Our first Sunday at DCRS, Mike and I were welcomed by Reverend Jim and a host of friendly people who invited us to browse the yard sale. In the years that followed, I developed lasting friendships with the yard sale crew and others from workshops, classes, the beer booth and fellowship after services. This became my “village.” When my marriage ended, this was the place I came in order to make sense of my single life and remain positive. But enough about why I came…here’s why I stayed:
