Going Green: Eco-Friendly Living

By Bev Sullivan

April 22nd was Earth Day and The Denver Church has asked me to offer insights into how we, as a spiritual community, can lessen our carbon footprint by living a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.

According to the experts, within 100 years natural lands and water resources will become scarce. Climate changes will irreversibly alter the planet. The habitats that support all life could be lost forever. The planet is being severely damaged by our unconsciousness.

Did you know . . .

  • It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose.

  • The average American uses 400 gallons of water per day, 30% of which is used outdoors and half for watering lawns. That works out to be 7 billion gallons of water per day.

  • A global switch to efficient lighting systems would trim the world’s electricity bill by nearly one-tenth.

  • The U.S. Postal Service delivered 300 pieces of junk mail to every adult and child in 2006. That required 100 million trees for paper. That number is the equivalent of deforesting the ENTIRE Rocky Mountain National Park every four months.

  • Americans receive 19 billion catalogs per year. Printing those catalogs requires 53 million trees a year.

  • Making paper for catalog companies alone eats up enough energy to power more than a million homes for one year.

  • I have cited just a few statistics, but the message is clear. We can no longer sit idly by wishing the situation was better. We must take action NOW to help our magnificent planet survive. I believe we have a moral obligation to practice conscientious, respectful consumption.

Let’s stop junking up the planet.

RETHINK • REUSE • REDUCE • RECYCLE

As an earth friendly consumer (and Professional Organizer), I have gathered recycling resources for everything under the sun and offer a few here (related article). I love the idea of saving time, money, energy and creating less trash. Let us all make responsible choices now and lessen the impact on our precious environment. •
